Consell asks Red Eléctrica de España to halt works on Es Ca Marí road and reopen traffic

The Consell de Formentera has informed Red Eléctrica de España (REE) that on Sunday 1 May, it must interrupt work of the third electric cable on the Es Ca Marí road. The work, which began in October and was to meant be completed by 30 April, has suffered delays in recent months due to weather conditions and the lack of materials due to global distribution problems.

With the approaching start of the tourist season, the Consell de Formentera has informed Red Eléctrica de España that it must stop operations entailing traffic closures on the road to Es Ca Marí. They can be restarted from 15 October. The Consell has requested that, from Sunday 1 May, no new work be started and that, as soon as possible, ditches in the road be filled in and the normal flow of traffic be restored. Formentera Local Police will monitor compliance with this order.

The Consell is also asking REE to resurface the affected road as soon as possible. Delays in recent months have been due to adverse weather conditions. Traffic will not be cut off as work continues, but the flow of vehicles will be regulated to minimise inconveniences.

According to REE, work on the third cable, which will connect the Torrent substation on Eivissa with the Es Ca Marí substation on Formentera, will involve deploying two 132 kilovolt (kV) links and mean the island can source its energy safely and sustainably. The infrastructure will cost €96 million.

Formentera informs three car rental companies and one ride-hailing service that they cannot operate this summer

The Formentera Office of Mobility reports that in recent weeks it has informed three car rental companies that they cannot increase their vehicle fleets or begin operations on Formentera during enforcement of formentera.eco, which this summer runs from 15 June to 15 September.

A car rental company authorised to rent only passenger cars requested to increase its fleet with 200 passenger cars and to incorporate 1,000 motor scooters.

A new company requested permission to start a motor scooter rental business.

A third company, which rents vehicles on Eivissa, has requested authorisation for them to access Formentera.

"Under formentera.eco rules, all vehicle rental companies with authorisation for this summer must reduce their fleet by 12%, compared to 2019, as companies in the sector have been told this past month", said Councillor of Mobility, Rafael González. Likewise, the rules don't allow new rental companies to open, added the councillor, nor do they permit rental vehicles from off the island to access Formentera while rules are in effect.

In addition, the Formentera Office of Mobility also communicated to a ride-hailing company that they cannot operate during the regulation period either. From 15 June to 15 September, 49 local taxi drivers (25 ordinary and 24 seasonal) will be authorised to transport passengers.

Motorists who wish to drive on Formentera this summer can make reservations from today

foto 2022 for.ecoThe Formentera Office of Mobility is pleased to report that visitors to formentera.eco can now make reservations to bring, drive and park vehicles on the island between 15 June and 15 September. No more than 19,696 vehicles may be driven on Formentera this summer.

Interested tourists can now reserve their spot simply using the online booking engine. Last year's rates –€1/day, €5 minimum for cars; €0.50/day, €2.50 minimum for mopeds and motorcycles– will continue to apply until entry in force in April or May of a new fee schedule which received initial plenary approval. Under the new regime car drivers will pay €3/day (€15 minimum) and motorcycle drivers €1.50/day (€7.50 minimum).

Residents of Formentera and the rest of the islands and drivers of electric vehicles will pay no charge for the accreditation. Formentera residents with the accreditation to park in the blue zone will be automatically accredited to drive on the island during the enforcement period. Drivers without the accreditation can get it simply and at no charge on formentera.eco.

Rafael González, Councillor of Mobility, encouraged local motorists to request their accreditation and check that the operation worked by entering their vehicle registration number in a specific section of the website. Accreditation is guaranteed for drivers who made overnight or ferry bookings before 8 February publication in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears, BOIB) of the new rules.

More controls and new information push

To make sure the rules are followed, Councillor González said that controls would be reinforced this summer. The island currently has monitoring cameras in La Savina and a mobile camera unit. In 2022 monitoring cameras will be installed at the roundabout near the hospital; parking attendants will check parked vehicles, and in La Savina drivers of rental vehicles will have to display information on their rental contract when they park.

González said that an educational push in May would seek to ensure that all vehicles, including those belonging to residents, have an associated authorisation.
