Ramonets, heavy-hitters on Christmas lineup for kids, play Formentera this Friday

ramonets feshotumateixp1Formentera’s culture and festivities department reports that at 7.00pm on Friday, 6 December, children in Sant Francesc at the Jardí de ses Eres festival tent will be treated to a free concert by Ramonets.

“It’s a guaranteed good time—for children and chaperones”, said culture and festivities chief Susana Labrador, highlighting “the Valencian rock’n’rollers’ animated blend of learning and fun”.

The band will be plugging their third album and the most personal to date—a collection of songs penned, this time, by the group themselves. It marks a departure, but the tongue-in-cheek humour and original Ramonet spirit are still in full effect. From getting their as a showstealing Ramones tribute band for kids, the hometown boys have increasingly seen their horizons widen.

Interactive show

Organisers insist that Ramonets are more than just a rock band. In addition to the musicians and technicians, the Ramonets team includes a dedicated kids’ entertainment expert. Known as an “animator”, the individual works the crowd, parades an array of costumes, dances, populates the stage with props and interacts with audience members. Handlers insist that “the animator changes it from a concert to an interactive show—and something that kids will go wild for”.

Ramonets are also about promoting the use of Catalan. Original Ramones’ compositions are translated into Catalan, and reworked for Ramonets’ audience. Fun, festive subjects are intermixed with songs that speak to equality, recycling, ecological advocacy and YOLO philosophy—values the band says they hope will remain important for children.

For group show this Christmas, local artists pay tribute to David Vergara

foto-expo-nadaljp-1-Last night, participating artists in a group show at the Ajuntament Vell gallery pulled back the curtain on a tribute to David Vergara. Formentera’s president and culture chief, Alejandra Ferrer and Susana Labrador, seized the chance to congratulate the group on an exhibition that has been included in the island’s Christmas holiday programme.

Thirteen Formentera artists from a breadth of disciplines will display paintings, sculptures, comics, collage and pottery in a show that runs until 6 January. Texts have been written by the honoree’s daughter Luz and Brenda Novak.

Consellera Labrador described the display as “an homage” to Vergara, who together with his wife Sabine, “newly arrived on the island in 1995, became the driving impulse for art and exhibitions at the Sala d’Exposicions”. “Even though both have left us, their memory will always be right here in the gallery that they filled time after time”, she proclaimed.

Contributing artists at the show include Robert Hawkins, Aaron Keydar, Mar Ample, Franz Kokowashi, Anna Ametller, Enric Riera, Maribel Escandell, Diana Massiliauskas, Teresa Matilla, Josep Ma Moreu, Pilar Mena, Juan Moreno and Lesley Hulme. The exhibition will be open from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm until 6 January.

Close-up on illustrated book about Eivissa and Formentera anchors December programming in local libraries

p--desembre-20191Formentera’s culture department unveiled details today about local libraries' December activities programme, with, at the fore, a presentation of an illustrated book about the Pine Islands at Marià Villangómez Library on Wednesday, 11 December, at 8.00pm.

In attendance at the presentation will be Lluís Ferrer and Joan Escandell, author and illustrator of Eivissa i Formentera il·lustrada, a comic book in which both men share their visions of the island where they were born and raised. The roughly 200-page, landscape-format volume is brought to life by 150 images of architecture, roads, astronomy, beaches, folklore, flora and fauna, flanked by texts from Ferrer. Maite Ferrer will be on hand to moderate.

Story time

At 5.00pm on Tuesday, 3 December, Contes per parlar amb la lluna will once again take place at Marià Villangómez Library. Xènia Fuertes stages the family-friendly storytelling sessions the first Tuesday of the month in October, November and December. The events are scheduled to resume in February after a brief pause, and are designed as a rendezvous point for families and a way to connect children aged zero to four with reading and spoken lore. The idea is that it's never too early for children to discover the magic of storytelling.

At 4.30pm on Wednesday, 4 December, the Sant Ferran library connection will be the scene of a Christmas decoration workshop for kids aged five to twelve. Participants of this year's workshop will use recycled plastic bottles to make fun Christmas trees.

Christmas closures

Programming at Marià Villangómez Library and the Sant Ferran library connection will resume after the Christmas holidays. Both buildings will be closed from Monday 23 December to Monday 6 January, inclusive, and will open their doors Tuesday, 7 January 2020.

"Mobil", intimately-scaled circus theatre for youngsters

la-gu--asa--mobil-3jThe culture department of the Consell de Formentera reports that at 6.00pm on Saturday 23 November, the doors of the Sala de Cultura-Cinema will open for La Güasa’s Mobil, a family-friendly circus production specially tuned for children four and up. Admission is €5 per child and free for adults.

With an unsteady hand, with fragility and tension, Mobil tells the story of a simple man and a complex machine. Unfettered by dialogue, the intimate solo production blends circus and object theatre, as the actor-juggler-bouncy ball bouncer extraordinaire conjures the world of clowns and develops an interactive stage presence that brims with energy.

Ninety per cent of the props are recycled materials pushed into service as on-stage contraptions together forming a mechanical labyrinth, as the confluence of mini realities whips audience expectation to a frenzy.

Mobil has received an array of accolades, among them the 2014 FETEN prize for best direction and the ACA prizes for best individual production and best stage design. The show is part of the Consell de Formentera’s Illa a Escena and the Spanish culture ministry’s Platea programme.

THE COMPANY: La Güasa Circ Teatre

The most punctilious production to emerge from the creative minds of La Güasa’s troupe of Córdoba natives, Mobil is the product of untold research—the culmination of which is equal parts object, machine and man. Adrien Batiot and José Luis Ruiz’s stage design is an expression of painstaking detail, and one that is emboldened under Pepa Gil’s direction. Preceded by a hard-fought reputation as a prodigious juggler, Mobil’s freewheeling Belgian lead now boldly faces his latest challenge: an intimate, one-man show, the component parts of which must function with clockwork precision; where the heft of the object and of scenography are counterbalanced by the awareness and emotion of live art and the trademark surprise of the circus. And a measure of humour all about, but of course.

On day to quash gender violence, Formentera welcomes ‘witches of our time’

foto-tres-voltes-rebel-expoj-1-Last night, the illustrator Tres Voltes Rebel, a.k.a. Ame Soler, pulled back the curtain on Som les bruixes d'avui, an exhibition which has brought to the island by Formentera's culture department as part of celebrations surrounding International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Born in Valencia and based in Barcelona, the artist creates illustrations advocating women and men’s equality.

Encouraging one and all to come out for the display, President Ferrer said she was “thrilled to see Ame Soler taking her appeal to the people of Formentera; the path she has tread invites reflection”. The exhibition will remain at the Sala d'Exposicions “Ajuntament Vell” until 30 November. It is open from Monday evenings through Saturday, 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
