"Instantáneas", the new exhibition by Álvaro Mendoza at "Ajuntament Vell"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that from 14 to 25 June, "Ajuntament Vell" Exhibition Space will host "Instantáneas" by Álvaro Mendoza.

In his latest exhibition of nine oil paintings on canvas, the artist depicts seascapes, rural landscapes and objects with which he hopes to stop time. According to Mendoza, the exhibition "offers visitors to immerse themselves in existentialism by reflecting on the instantaneous and eternity, something we connect with as when we contemplate the works".

The artist holds a degree in architecture and was born in Colombia but has lived on Formentera since 2010. He says the island gives him "a space to coincide with time, to dialogue with the landscape, with architecture, with emptiness and absence".

The exhibition opens on Monday 13 June at 8.00pm and can be visited at the "Ajuntament Vell" Exhibition Space Monday to Saturday, 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

The gallery is closed on Sundays, holidays and Monday mornings.

Lecture and presentation of Aprendre, by author Eduard Vallory

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that at 7.30pm next Friday 17 June, the Teachers' Resource Centre [Centre de Professorat, CEP] of Formentera and the Marià Villangómez Library have scheduled a presentation of Aprendre, a book by author Eduard Vallory, in the plenary hall of the Consell (next to the Centre de Dia). The presentation will be given by the author and will include a lecture.

Vallory is a social analyst and change manager who was once nearly a school dropout. His involvement with Scouting and associations helped him develop his abilities, and he completed three university degrees in Philosophy, Journalism and Social and Political Sciences. He has lived in Barcelona, Chicago, Cambridge and New York, and held professional leadership responsibilities in government, academia, research and education. In education, he promoted the Escola Nova 21 alliance for an advanced educational system. He chairs Catesco (formerly Unescocat) and works to drive educational change at Pompeu Fabra University.

In his work, Vallory analyses a transmissive educational system that bureaucracy has made resistant to change and left locked in inertia. "For decades, educational systems have been talking about integrated development, but they continue to focus on rote and representational learning and do not provide tools to develop competencies for life", Vallory points out.

In Aprendre, the author shares his personal experiences, learning, education and reflects on death, sexuality, identity, happiness, compassion and love. Vallory showcases testimonies from courageous educators who have fought for change. He explains, "This is an honest book that invites readers to reflect on the values that education should have and that are, essentially, the values of humanity".

Diana Bustamante's "Des de la mar" settles in at "Ajuntament Vell"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that "Ajuntament Vell" exhibition space will welcome Diana Bustamante's "Des de la mar" between 1 and 11 June.

After a string of runs in nine cities, including Eivissa and Dènia, since 3 July 2020, this travelling display will land on the island of Formentera to spotlight coastal Mediterranean landscapes and the occasional scene from the Atlantic shores of Galicia. Featured locations such as Ses Illetes, Es Vedrà, Dalt Vila and Benirràs are well known to residents of the Pine Islands.

In her paintings, Bustamante tackles abstract expressionism with a voice all her own by synthesising forms with distinctly Mediterranean, luminous chromatics of greens, blues and earth tones. Her hallmark vision leaves visitors of the exhibition dreaming of landscapes, the sea and its surroundings.

The Madrid-born artist with a degree in fine arts lives in Santa Eulària des Riu, where she grew up. Coastal landscapes, halfway between abstract painting and eastern-inspired figuration, have anchored Bustamante's studies.

The exhibition will open at 8.00pm on Tuesday 31 May. "Ajuntament Vell" exhibition space is open from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 7.00pm to 9.00pm, Monday to Saturday.

The gallery is closed on Sundays, holidays and Monday mornings.
